The WNBA spotlight once again falls on Las Vegas Aces forward A’ja Wilson. The league confirmed on Friday that the reigning Most Valuable Player has been named Western Conference Player of the Week for her performances spanning September 1 through 11. This marks the 28th time in her career she has captured the weekly distinction and her sixth such recognition this season, the highest total in the league this year. Wilson previously received the award on August 26, August 19, August 12, June 1, and July 1.
Her latest accolade moves her past Candace Parker, who finished her career with 27 Player of the Week honors. Wilson now holds the second-most in league history, trailing only Tina Charles, who claimed her 33rd award earlier this season. The all-time record for the most in a single season sits at seven, achieved three times in the Eastern Conference. In the Western Conference, the benchmark is six, a number Wilson now shares with Nneka Ogwumike’s 2016 campaign after also reaching it last year.
Wilson’s dominance this past week was undeniable as she guided Las Vegas to a flawless 4-0 record. She averaged 24.0 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.0 blocks, 3.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per outing. Her efficiency was remarkable, connecting on 61 percent of her field goal attempts, converting all seven of her three-point shots, and finishing with a 94.4 percent success rate from the free throw line. The stretch included two 31-point performances, two double-doubles, and a reminder of why she continues to define excellence on both ends of the court.
The Aces, who finished the regular season as the second seed with a 30-14 record, now turn their attention to the playoffs. They will open their first-round series against the seventh-seeded Seattle Storm (23-21) on Sunday, September 14, at Michelob ULTRA Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Eastern, with ESPN carrying the broadcast. Game 2 will take place in Seattle on September 16 at 6:30 p.m., also on ESPN. If the series requires a third contest, it will return to Las Vegas on September 18, streaming on ESPN2.
Beyond the opening round, the WNBA Semifinals will begin on September 21. This season’s Finals will take on a new format, shifting to a best-of-seven for the first time in league history, beginning October 3.
