Amazon MGM Acquires Liz Tomforde’s Bestselling Windy City Sports Romance Series for TV

One of BookTok’s most beloved sports romance franchises is heading to television. Amazon MGM Studios has acquired the rights to Liz Tomforde’s Windy City book series, with Emmy-nominated writer Alison McDonald attached to write and executive produce the adaptation. The deal was reported exclusively by Deadline on May 6, 2026.

Amazon MGM Studios has landed the rights to Liz Tomforde’s bestselling Windy City book series, with an eye toward development of a TV series. Alison McDonald is on board to write and executive produce, with Premeditated Productions set to produce under its first-look deal with the studio. Tomforde herself will also serve as an executive producer on the project.

Kicking off with 2022’s Mile High, Windy City is a five-book interconnected sports romance series that follows a close-knit group of five professional athletes as they each navigate falling for the strong, complicated women who unexpectedly enter their lives. The series has sold millions of copies worldwide, received over a billion page reads on Kindle, sold in 30 countries, and been translated into 21 languages.

The source material’s scope makes it well suited for a serialized television format. The Windy City universe spans hockey, basketball, and baseball storylines, building a shared world of romance, rivalry, and emotional stakes that has helped the series generate enormous fan loyalty across platforms.

Tomforde noted in a statement that the journey from page to screen feels surreal, adding that the series began as a personal passion project while she was working as a flight attendant for a professional hockey team.

McDonald brings substantial prestige-television experience to the adaptation. Her credits include Russian Doll, Your Honor, Nurse Jackie, and the acclaimed remake of Roots, as well as Amazon’s American Girl Story and Netflix’s Karma’s World.

Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark from Premeditated will executive produce, with SVP of Television Julie Jarmon serving as co-executive producer. The project marks the latest in an expanding slate of high-profile book-to-screen adaptations Premeditated Productions is producing at Amazon MGM, which also includes Fourth Wing and Storm Breakers.

No cast, premiere date, or episode order has been announced. The project remains in early development.
