Cooper Flagg Dunked on Brook Lopez in Front of a Crowd Calling Him Overrated and the Basketball World Has Not Recovered

There are moments in a sports season that exist completely outside of the final score. Moments that get replayed thousands of times before the night is even over. Moments that end up as someone’s phone wallpaper by midnight. What Cooper Flagg did to Brook Lopez at the Intuit Dome on Tuesday night was exactly that kind of moment and the basketball world is still processing it.

The Clippers’ infamous Wall section greeted Flagg at the free throw line, shouting “Overrated” but the 19-year-old responded the only way he knows how. He made them regret it. Flagg calmly knocked down both free throws and then, as if that was not enough of a response, he drove straight at the heart of the Clippers defense and went up against one of the most physically imposing centers in the league.

Flagg delivered a full-force, one-handed tomahawk slam over Brook Lopez that left the Intuit Dome momentarily stunned.

The building that had been chanting at him seconds earlier went completely silent. The visiting contingent of Mavericks fans in the crowd erupted. And somewhere on social media, a thousand phones started recording the replay before the echoes had even settled.

The one-handed slam over the seven-foot-one Lopez earned a massive 116.8 on the NBA’s tracking-based dunk score, tying for the sixth-highest mark of the entire 2025-26 season. That number tells you everything about the degree of difficulty involved. Lopez is not a soft target. He is a veteran big man who has spent years protecting the rim in this league and he met Flagg at the top of his jump. It did not matter.

After the game, Flagg was asked about the dunk and his response was pure nineteen year old cool. “It’s probably my favorite dunk for this year so far,” Flagg said. “He’s a big dude and he’s got a good presence in the paint so it’s a cool one for sure.”

On the crowd that had been riding him all night, he was equally unbothered. “That’s something I’ve heard since high school. It kind of brought me back a little bit. That whole Wall thing is kind of funny. You don’t see that in the league very often.” A teenager, in an opposing arena, being booed by an organized crowd section, and his response is to compare it to high school memories. That kind of unshakeable composure is not something you can coach into a player.

Flagg finished the night with 25 points and nine rebounds despite shooting 9-of-25 from the field in a 116-103 loss. The Mavericks came up short on the scoreboard but Flagg’s performance gave Dallas something more valuable than a win at this stage of the season. It gave the Rookie of the Year race a defining image.

Flagg entered Tuesday’s game having scored 96 points over his previous two outings, the most by a rookie in any two-game span since Wilt Chamberlain. And even on a night where his shooting was inconsistent and his team lost by thirteen points on the road, he still managed to produce the single most talked about play in the entire league.

His alma mater Duke said it best. They posted the clip with three words. “Cooper Flagg caught a body.” The internet agreed immediately and loudly. Brook Lopez is a respected veteran with years of experience. On Tuesday night in Inglewood, he became a poster. And Cooper Flagg called it his favorite dunk of the season like he was discussing a pleasant afternoon.

The Rookie of the Year race is not over. But moments like this one do not just live in stats. They live in memories. And this one is going to be talked about for a very long time.
