Nobody expected it to be this close. When the NBA officially released the Rookie of the Year voting numbers, the basketball world collectively stopped scrolling and did a double take. Cooper Flagg, the Dallas Mavericks phenom who dominated headlines all season long, won the award but by just 26 points over Charlotte Hornets guard Kon Knueppel.
Twenty-six points. In an award that has sometimes been decided by landslides, this was practically a coin flip.
The NBA confirmed it themselves this is officially the second-smallest voting difference between top finishers since the 2002-03 season. That means in over two decades of Rookie of the Year history, only one race has been tighter than what we just witnessed between Flagg and Knueppel. The debate that raged all season on social media, in barbershops, and on every sports talk show in America turned out to be completely justified. The voters were just as split as the fans.
For Flagg, the win is still a win. The Dallas Mavericks rookie has been nothing short of extraordinary this season, delivering performances that reminded older fans of legends and gave younger ones a new player to obsess over. But the margin of victory means this conversation is far from over. Knueppel supporters are louder than ever, and rightfully so.
This was one of the most competitive Rookie of the Year races in modern NBA history, and the numbers prove it. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
