The partnership that brought Banner 17 to Los Angeles appears to be dissolving in real-time. According to a bombshell report from NBA insider Shams Charania, the relationship between LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers is “nearing an end,” with tensions reaching a boiling point behind the scenes.
The report suggests that the friction stems from the Lakers’ aggressive pivot toward their new acquisition, Luka Dončić. Since arriving in the blockbuster trade from Dallas, Dončić has been firmly anointed as the franchise’s new cornerstone, a move that has reportedly left James feeling marginalized for the first time in his career.
“The reality of what we have right here is the end of a relationship,” Charania stated on The Pat McAfee Show. “You can see they’ve clearly turned the page. Luka Dončić is where this team is going”.
Adding fuel to the fire is a perceived rift between James and Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss. Reports indicate Buss has privately expressed frustration with what she views as James’ “outsized ego” and a lack of gratitude regarding the team’s decision to draft his son, Bronny James, in 2024.
The tension spilled into the public eye this week when Buss posted a heartfelt tribute to Kobe Bryant on social media. While ostensibly a memorial to the Lakers legend, the timing—coming amidst these reports—led many fans to interpret the post as subtle “shade” toward LeBron, emphasizing Kobe’s loyalty and “team over self” mentality.
While James has publicly shrugged off the rumors, stating, “I don’t care about articles,” his agent Rich Paul offered a different tone. “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire,” Paul admitted on a recent podcast, signaling that the camp is well aware of the shifting tides.
With LeBron set to hit unrestricted free agency this summer, the writing appears to be on the wall. The “Luka Era” has begun in Los Angeles, and the King’s reign in Purple and Gold may be over.
