If you pitched this script to Hollywood, they would tell you it’s too unrealistic.
Imagine being the undisputed greatest college player in one sport—winning the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, setting NCAA records, and getting drafted No. 1 overall. Then, imagine walking away from all of it to chase a dream in a completely different sport where nobody knows your name.
That is the Pat Spencer story. And as of this weekend, the story has a new chapter.
The News: Official Contract
The Golden State Warriors officially announced on Saturday that they have converted Pat Spencer’s two-way contract to a standard NBA contract for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.
This isn’t a charity signing. The 29-year-old guard has forced the Warriors’ hand with undeniable production. Spencer has appeared in 36 games this season (including five starts), averaging 5.8 points and 2.9 assists in roughly 14 minutes per night.
But it was his performance on Thursday against the Phoenix Suns that sealed the deal. With Stephen Curry sidelined, Spencer stepped into the starting lineup and dropped a career-high 20 points, leading Golden State to a massive 101-97 road victory.
The “Warriors DNA”
Why does Steve Kerr trust a former lacrosse player in the middle of a playoff push? Because Spencer is the ultimate “Warriors DNA” guy. He is high-IQ, makes the right reads, cuts hard, and defends with a physicality that comes from his lacrosse background.
Kerr has been vocal about his trust in Spencer all season. After a breakout game against Cleveland back in December, Kerr went viral when he told reporters:
“His coach realized that Pat is that motherf*er.”
That level of trust from a four-time championship coach speaks volumes. Kerr knows that when the playoffs get tight, he needs players who won’t shrink in the moment. Spencer, who played in front of massive crowds as a lacrosse superstar at Loyola, has proven he has ice in his veins.
The Gamble That Paid Off
It is easy to forget how insane Spencer’s journey really is.
-
Lacrosse Legend: Won the Tewaaraton Award (Lacrosse Heisman) in 2019. NCAA all-time leader in assists.
-
The Switch: Transferred to Northwestern to play basketball for one season.
-
The Grind: Went undrafted. Played in Germany. Grinded in the G-League for the Capital City Go-Go and Santa Cruz Warriors.
Now, he is on a standard contract for the most valuable franchise in the NBA, gearing up for a postseason run.
Pat Spencer isn’t just a “feel-good story” anymore. He is a legitimate NBA rotation player. And for anyone who loves an underdog who bet on themselves when the odds were zero… he is the easiest guy in the league to root for.
