The world of ’90s television lost one of its most beloved figures. Nicholas Brendon best known to millions of fans as Xander Harris, the witty, loyal, wonderfully human sidekick on Buffy the Vampire Slayer passed away in his sleep in San Francisco at the age of 54. His family confirmed the news, stating that he died of natural causes.
The family’s statement captured their grief with honesty and love: “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky had found his passion in painting and art. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create.” The statement also noted that while his personal struggles were no secret, “he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.”
Nicholas Brendon was born on April 12, 1971, in Los Angeles. His path to acting was unconventional he originally dreamed of playing professional baseball and struggled with a stutter that he would later champion as a spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America. He turned to acting in part as a way to manage that stutter, and was cast as Xander Harris three months after signing with a manager. The role changed everything.
For seven seasons between 1997 and 2003, Brendon appeared in all but one of Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s 144 episodes. Xander Harris was the show’s beating heart the ordinary human among supernatural heroes, the comic relief who could break your heart in the very next scene, the best friend who showed up every time without powers and without fail. He earned Saturn Award nominations for Best Genre TV Actor in 1998 and 1999, and the role made him a permanent fixture of pop culture’s golden era.
The tributes from his Buffy family came swiftly and emotionally. Alyson Hannigan, who played his best friend Willow Rosenberg for seven seasons, wrote: “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP.” Emma Caulfield, who portrayed his love interest Anya, also shared a heartfelt tribute. The outpouring of grief from the Buffy community a fandom that has always been among the most dedicated in television history has been profound.
The loss lands particularly hard coming little more than a year after the death of Michelle Trachtenberg, another member of the Buffy cast. The Scooby Gang is growing smaller, and every loss is a reminder of how irreplaceable that show and those people were to an entire generation. Nicholas Brendon’s Xander Harris taught viewers that you don’t need powers to be a hero. You just need to show up. Rest easy, Nicky.
