In the NBA, “promising rookies” show flashes. They have a good quarter here, a highlight dunk there, maybe a 20-point game that gets fans excited about the future.
Cooper Flagg is not a promising rookie. Based on what we have witnessed over the last week, Cooper Flagg is already a franchise cornerstone, a top-tier offensive engine, and arguably one of the most dangerous scorers in the league.
The 19-year-old phenom has officially entered unchartered territory, doing something that not even LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, or his own teammate Luka Dončić did as teenagers.
Here is the breakdown of Flagg’s historic week, his third consecutive Rookie of the Month award, and the uncomfortable truth facing the Dallas Mavericks.
The “First Teen” in History
The numbers Cooper Flagg has put up over his last three games look like video game glitches.
-
36 Points, 9 Rebounds, 6 Assists
-
34 Points, 12 Rebounds, 5 Assists
-
49 Points, 10 Rebounds, 3 Assists
With that 49-point explosion, Flagg became the first teenager in NBA history to record three straight 30+ point games.
It isn’t just volume scoring, either. Over this three-game stretch, Flagg is averaging a mind-bending 39.7 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game. He is doing it with the efficiency of a ten-year veteran, shooting 57.7% from the field and 46.2% from three-point range.
Most rookies hit a “wall” in January or February. Their legs get heavy, and their shooting splits dip. Flagg has done the opposite. He has accelerated, turning the “Maine Event” into the main attraction of the entire NBA.
Three Months, Three Trophies
Before the historic scoring binge even finished, the league office confirmed what everyone in Dallas already knew. Cooper Flagg has been named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month for January.
This marks his third trophy in three months. He has swept the award every single month of his professional career so far. His January averages were the definition of consistency:
-
20.8 PPG
-
7.2 RPG
-
4.5 APG
-
47.8% FG
From his highly anticipated debut at Madison Square Garden to the 49-point masterclass, Flagg has been in a league of his own. The Rookie of the Year race is quickly turning from a competition into a coronation.
The Elephant in the Room
However, amidst the broken records and viral highlights, there is a glaring problem in Dallas. The Mavericks have lost five straight games.
It is a strange and frustrating paradox: The better Cooper Flagg plays, the more the Mavericks seem to struggle in the win column.
While Flagg is posting MVP-caliber numbers, the rest of the roster has been unable to capitalize. Defense has been an issue, closing out games has been a struggle, and the support system around the 19-year-old superstar looks shaky at best.
This brings up a difficult question for the front office. Usually, when you draft a teenager, you expect a learning curve. You expect him to be the one making mistakes while the veterans carry the load. But in Dallas, the roles are reversed. The 19-year-old is ready to win now. He is putting up numbers that demand victory.
The real question isn’t whether Cooper Flagg is ready for the NBA. The question is whether the Dallas Mavericks are ready for Cooper Flagg.
For now, Mavs fans can celebrate the history. They have a generational talent wearing #32. But if this losing streak continues, the conversation is going to shift from “Look how good he is” to “Get him some help.”
