Is the New Harry Potter Too Different? The HBO Trailer Has Fans Completely Split

The wizarding world is back and the internet has officially lost its mind. HBO dropped the first official trailer for its highly anticipated Harry Potter series on March 25, 2026, and within hours the clip had generated one of the most polarizing fan reactions in recent television history. The show is titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for its debut season, and it is set to premiere on Christmas Day 2026, which is actually earlier than the 2027 date that had been previously announced. Consider that an early Christmas present that some fans are thrilled about and others are not quite sure what to do with.

The trailer opens with Harry living in his cupboard under the stairs at the Dursleys’ home, bullied by his cousin Dudley, before his acceptance letter to Hogwarts arrives and Hagrid explains the wizarding world to him. Dominic McLaughlin stars as the young Harry Potter, joined by Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. The three young leads are complete newcomers to professional acting, selected from a pool of more than 30,000 auditionees, which is either an inspiring story of discovery or a terrifying gamble depending on which corner of the fandom you occupy.

The adult casting has generated its own heated debate. John Lithgow plays Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu takes on Severus Snape, Janet McTeer portrays Professor McGonagall, and Nick Frost plays Rubeus Hagrid. Lithgow as Dumbledore has been broadly well-received, with the veteran actor bringing an entirely different energy to the role than either Richard Harris or Michael Gambon. Nick Frost as Hagrid has divided opinion, with some fans finding the casting inspired and others unable to imagine anyone but Robbie Coltrane in the role.

The casting of Paapa Essiedu as Snape has been the most controversial element of the entire production. Having a Black actor in the role described in the books as a pale white man and previously played by the iconic Alan Rickman has caused an uproar in some segments of the fandom. Essiedu has recently revealed he received death threats over the role and that he has used such backlash to fuel his performance.

Early reactions have been broadly positive, even if some are complaining about the lack of magic in the trailer and fans pointing out that the colour palette is much darker compared to the original film. The show is structured as a faithful, book-by-book adaptation, with Succession writer Francesca Gardiner serving as showrunner and Game of Thrones veteran Mark Mylod directing several episodes. The entire production is expected to take 10 years to complete.

HBO’s investment is enormous. The series has been described as a $300 million production, with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO JB Perrette calling it “the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period.”

The original Daniel Radcliffe has even weighed in, issuing a plea asking fans to avoid comparing the new cast to himself and costars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, saying “if everyone really means that” they want to look out for the kids, then they should stop asking about the original trio constantly.

Love it or question it, Harry Potter is back. Christmas 2026 cannot come soon enough for half the internet, and perhaps a little too soon for the other half.
