Jimmy Kimmel Is Widening His Late Night Lead Every Single Week and the Numbers Are Becoming Historic

Five weeks into the post-Colbert era of late night television, one thing has become impossible to dispute. Jimmy Kimmel is not simply winning. He is winning by more than he was winning last week, and more than he was winning the week before that. The gap between Kimmel and his competitors is not stabilizing. It is growing.

The numbers tell the story with complete clarity. According to verified Nielsen data, Jimmy Kimmel Live averaged 2.185 million total viewers on the first direct competition night of June 1, against 1.5 million for The Tonight Show and 628,000 for Comics Unleashed on CBS. Year over year the show is up 22 percent in total viewers and 45 percent in the adults 18 to 49 demographic. Season to date the show is up 20 percent in both total viewers and the demo versus the same period last season.

The YouTube numbers reinforce the linear story. Nightly monologues are averaging more than 4.4 million views. The channel has surpassed 281 million total views in 2026. Those digital numbers matter not just for prestige but for advertising revenue and the cultural influence that drives booking power for future guests and determines which advertisers most want to be associated with the show.

What makes the widening gap particularly significant is the trajectory. During the final year of Colbert’s run, Kimmel had already overtaken him in the key 18 to 49 demographic for the first time. The gap in total viewers had narrowed from over 2 million at Colbert’s peak to under 300,000 by early 2026. When Colbert exited, that competitive dynamic disappeared entirely and Kimmel absorbed a meaningful portion of the audience that had been watching CBS at 11:35.

The Tonight Show has not seen a comparable surge. Jimmy Fallon is up modestly year over year but the growth rate is a fraction of Kimmel’s. Seth Meyers at 12:35 is building strong digital numbers through A Closer Look but his linear ratings operate in a different tier than the 11:35 competition.

Byron Allen’s Comics Unleashed on CBS is not in the same conversation by any conventional ratings measure.

Kimmel is under contract with ABC through May 2027. If these numbers hold through the summer the renewal conversation is going to be one of the most valuable in television.
