New York — The NBA league office dropped the hammer on Wednesday, issuing suspensions to four players following a chaotic brawl during the Detroit Pistons’ recent victory over the Charlotte Hornets. The incident, which resulted in multiple ejections during the game, has led to significant lost time for the primary instigators, most notably Detroit’s Isaiah Stewart.
Stewart, who has a history of on-court altercations, received the most severe punishment: a seven-game suspension without pay. The league cited his role in escalating the conflict as the primary reason for the lengthy ban. The altercation reportedly began after a hard foul involving Hornets center Moussa Diabaté and Pistons big man Jalen Duren, which quickly spiraled into a mass confrontation involving players from both sides.
In addition to Stewart, the league suspended three other players involved in the melee. Charlotte’s Moussa Diabaté and Detroit’s Jalen Duren were among those disciplined for their roles in sparking the fight. The incident marred what was otherwise a competitive win for the Pistons, who have been showing signs of life in the Eastern Conference standings.
For the Pistons, losing Stewart for seven games is a significant blow to their frontcourt rotation. Known for his physicality and defensive presence, Stewart is a key cultural pillar for the team. However, the NBA has made it clear that fighting will result in strict penalties, especially for repeat offenders. The suspensions will begin immediately, forcing both teams to adjust their lineups as they head into the final stretch before the All-Star break.
