Patrick Schwarzenegger Cast in Dual Role Opposite Vince Vaughn and Theo James in S. Craig Zahler’s The Bookie & The Bruiser

Patrick Schwarzenegger has been cast in a demanding dual role in The Bookie & The Bruiser, the upcoming period crime thriller written and directed by S. Craig Zahler, Deadline confirmed exclusively on May 4, 2026. Schwarzenegger will play twin brothers Augie and Bernard opposite Vince Vaughn and Theo James in the film, which is set in 1959 New York City.

The film centers on two World War II veterans who find themselves unable to readjust to civilian life after returning from combat. Rivner (James), a pensive Jewish man, and Boscolo (Vaughn), a physically imposing Italian-American, partner up to run an illicit gambling operation, taking on the roles of bookmaker and enforcer, respectively. Their operation proves highly profitable — until they are caught in a violent power struggle between the Mafia and an Irish gang, forcing them into a fight for survival.

Schwarzenegger’s character Augie is described as a down-on-his-luck gambler whose desperate attempt to escape a crushing debt pulls Rivner and Boscolo into the orbit of New York’s warring criminal underworld. His twin brother Bernard, by contrast, is a respectable family man whose stable life is violently upended by his sibling’s reckless choices and the dangerous men they attract. The dual casting represents Schwarzenegger’s most technically demanding role to date, requiring him to differentiate two distinct characters sharing screen space within the same production.

For Zahler, the film marks his third collaboration with Vince Vaughn, following the 2017 prison thriller Brawl in Cell Block 99 and the 2018 crime drama Dragged Across Concrete, both of which earned strong reviews from critics who praised Vaughn’s dramatic transformation under Zahler’s direction. Zahler is also known for Bone Tomahawk (2015), the acclaimed Western horror film. The director has not released a feature since 2019.

Oscar-winning producer Anthony Katagas, whose credits include 12 Years a Slave and Ad Astra, will produce for Keep Your Head Productions alongside Dave Caplan (Longlegs, The Monkey), Dan Bekerman, and Vaughn himself. C2 Motion Picture Group is fully financing the project, with UTA Independent Film Group and Range Select handling financing and North American distribution rights. Anton is representing the film for international sales at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.

Schwarzenegger’s casting follows a period of notable career momentum. He most recently starred as Saxon Ratliff in the third season of HBO’s Emmy-winning series The White Lotus, and recently wrapped Florian Zeller’s psychological thriller Bunker, starring alongside Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem. He has also been announced for the lead in 20th Century Studios’ adaptation of Emily Henry’s bestselling novel Beach Read, opposite Phoebe Dynevor.
