The Rookie of the Year Race is Heating Up
The battle for the NBA’s Rookie of the Year honor has officially evolved into a two-man race between former collegiate teammates Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel. While the number-one overall pick, Cooper Flagg, has turned heads with his incredible all-around play and explosive scoring stretches, former NBA champion and analyst Richard Jefferson is taking a firm stance on who deserves the hardware.
According to Jefferson, the award belongs to the Charlotte Hornets’ sharpshooting phenom, Kon Knueppel.
Cooper Flagg’s Phenomenal Run
There is no denying that Cooper Flagg has lived up to the immense hype surrounding him entering the league. After a slightly slow start, the top pick has been dominating the floor. His stat line alone paints the picture of a future NBA superstar:
-
Points: 20.1 per game
-
Rebounds: 6.6 per game
-
Assists: 4.5 per game
-
Defense: 1.1 steals and 0.9 blocks per game
Flagg even went on an absolute tear between late January and early February, averaging 32.0 points over a six-game stretch—highlighted by a jaw-dropping 49-point performance.
Despite these incredible numbers, Jefferson believes that when it comes to winning impact, Knueppel holds the edge.
Kon Knueppel: Breaking Records and Elevating the Hornets
“Kon Knueppel has had a much better rookie season, right?” Jefferson recently asserted. “He already broke the rookie record for threes. He’s on pace for 250, 275 as a rookie. He’s elevated and brought stability to an organization.”
Knueppel has been the missing offensive piece the Charlotte Hornets desperately needed. He is currently averaging 19.3 points per game, shooting an incredibly efficient 48.9% from the field and a blistering 43.7% from beyond the arc.
More importantly, his production is translating directly into wins. Last season, the Hornets won a dismal 19 games. This year, with Knueppel helping space the floor for LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges, Charlotte sits two games over .500 and is firmly in the hunt for a playoff spot—their first winning season since 2021-22.
The “Young Klay Thompson” Comparison
Standing at 6’6″, the Milwaukee native’s lethal shooting stroke has drawn high praise from Jefferson, who boldly compared his game to a young Klay Thompson. However, RJ was quick to point out that Knueppel is actually outpacing the four-time champion in his rookie year.
“Klay Thompson didn’t hit this his rookie year. Klay Thompson didn’t hit these numbers his second year,” Jefferson noted.
Knueppel currently has 242 three-pointers with 12 games still left to play in the regular season. It took Klay Thompson four seasons to hit 239 threes in a single campaign.
“When you look at Kon averaging 20 points a game, the team is .500. They look like they’re relevant for the first time… oh, best believe Knueppel is my Rookie of the Year,” RJ stated.
Who Will Take Home the Crown?
While Flagg undoubtedly possesses the tools to be the NBA’s next perennial MVP candidate, the immediate impact Knueppel has had on a struggling franchise is impossible to ignore. Flagg may have the highlight-reel dunks and the pedigree, but Knueppel’s historic shooting and winning impact in Charlotte make a compelling case for Rookie of the Year.
