Scott Pelley was not going quietly. He said as much in the days after his termination from CBS News on June 2, and his first major interview since that firing confirms it completely.
In a wide-ranging conversation with New York Times journalist Lulu Garcia-Navarro, Pelley fought back tears as he described what happened inside CBS News over the past eighteen months. He said CBS News is on fire. He said Bari Weiss, the editor-in-chief installed by Paramount-Skydance CEO David Ellison, should be removed from her position. He said the level of political influence he witnessed in his final weeks at the network was something he had never experienced in 37 years at CBS News.

The interview contained specific allegations that go well beyond general complaints about management. Pelley told the Times that Weiss had put a thumb on the scale in favor of the Trump administration’s version of events regarding a 60 Minutes report on immigration enforcement in Minneapolis. He described Weiss sending notes to executive producer Tanya Simon approximately four hours after the editorial deadline, urging changes that Pelley said were aligned with Trump’s portrayal of federal officers shooting protesters at an ICE crackdown.
CBS News responded through a spokesperson saying Pelley’s argument is not credible and that there is no political interference at the organization. The feedback Weiss sent, the spokesperson said, had no political motivation and was proposed solely to make the piece as strong, fair and accurate as possible.
Pelley also went after Weiss’s professional qualifications directly, telling the Times she had zero television experience and had never managed a large global operation like CBS News before being installed in the editor-in-chief role.
The broader context that Pelley did not let his audience forget: Paramount settled a lawsuit brought by President Trump for 16 million dollars in 2025, a suit that legal experts consistently described as having no viable basis. The settlement came while Paramount’s merger with Skydance required Trump administration approval. The merger was approved. Weiss was installed. And then, one by one, the journalists who had defined 60 Minutes for decades were removed or driven out.
Pelley grew visibly angry when asked about Trump calling him stupid and part of crooked people who do not care about the country. He pushed back hard. Stupid I can take, he said. Stiff, yeah probably. But don’t care about the country? I have never worn the uniform but I have been in combat for this country in Afghanistan and Iraq and Kuwait.
He anticipated what would come next and said it out loud: Fox News is going to just run the parts where I am crying and say I am a lunatic.
He was right. They did. He was not a lunatic. He was a man who spent 37 years building something and then watched it being taken apart from the inside, and refused to pretend he did not see it happening.
