Basketball is a physical game, but sometimes the contact goes a little too far.
In Wednesday night’s physical battle between the Boston Celtics and the Atlanta Hawks, the game came to a screeching halt when Hawks big man Onyeka Okongwu took a brutal inadvertent elbow to the face from Jaylen Brown.
The collision sent Okongwu straight to the locker room with what the Hawks are officially calling a facial contusion but the reality looked much more painful. Reports from the arena suggest Okongwu suffered significant dental damage, leaving the game with a towel over his mouth and visibly shaken.
While the Hawks got the last laugh on the scoreboard, winning 117–106, the postgame chatter focused heavily on the health of their young center. And if there is one person in the NBA who knows exactly what Okongwu is going through, it’s the man who hit him.
“I Know From Experience”
Jaylen Brown, who led the Celtics with 21 points in the loss, didn’t shy away from addressing the incident during his postgame media availability.
Visibly empathetic, Brown offered a quote that was equal parts apologetic and brutally honest about the recovery process:
“I know from my own experiences with a fractured face and chipped teeth that shit is a hassle. So, wasn’t intentional. I know it’s gonna be a long day at the dentist. Hopefully, he has a good recovery.”
The “Masked Jaylen” Connection
Brown’s empathy isn’t just lip service. Celtics fans remember vividly when Brown suffered a facial fracture in February 2023 after a collision with teammate Jayson Tatum.
That injury forced Brown to wear a protective black mask for the remainder of that season and into the playoffs. He knows the pain, the swelling, and yes the dreaded “long day at the dentist” that awaits Okongwu this week.
While the play was ruled a common foul after review, the result is a significant blow to an already depleted Hawks frontcourt. Okongwu had 17 points in 29 minutes before exiting, continuing a strong stretch of play.
Game Notes: Celtics Shorthanded in Defeat
The incident overshadowed what was a tough night for Boston. Playing without Jayson Tatum (Achilles) and Kristaps Porzingis, the Celtics struggled to contain Atlanta’s perimeter attack.
-
Nickeil Alexander-Walker exploded for 21 points to lead the Hawks.
-
Jalen Johnson added a massive 19-point, 14-rebound double-double.
-
For Boston, Jaylen Brown (21 pts) and Derrick White tried to carry the load, but the team shot just 9-of-34 from deep.
What’s Next?
The Celtics (29-18) will look to bounce back as they continue their road trip, but all eyes will be on the injury report. With Tatum out long-term, they can’t afford any more attrition.
As for Okongwu, his status for Friday’s game against the Rockets is officially “questionable,” but given Brown’s assessment of the damage, don’t be surprised if we see him on the sideline or sporting a new mask of his own very soon.
