When Joel Embiid is on the basketball court, he is an unstoppable, MVP-caliber force of nature. The tragedy of his career, however, is simply getting him on the floor.
As the Philadelphia 76ers continue to slide down the Eastern Conference standings, currently clinging to the ninth seed amidst a brutal stretch of injuries, their franchise center just crossed a statistical threshold that no player ever wants to reach. By missing Sunday night’s matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers due to a lingering right oblique strain, Embiid officially hit the “485 Mark.”
Over his decade in the National Basketball Association, Joel Embiid has now played in exactly 485 games. As of Sunday, he has also missed exactly 485 games.
It is a staggering, 50/50 split that perfectly encapsulates the physical toll his body has endured. From the foot injuries that completely erased his first two professional seasons to the recent knee and oblique issues that have limited him to just 33 games this year, Embiid’s career has been defined by the highest of highs and the most frustrating medical lows.
Despite the grim milestone, his production remains elite when active. He is currently averaging 26.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. Sixers head coach Nick Nurse recently hinted that Embiid is returning to individual on-court work and could rejoin the lineup during the team’s upcoming Western Conference road trip. However, for a fanbase desperate for a deep playoff run, the 485 statistic is a terrifying reminder of their superstar’s fragility.
