The Charlotte Hornets are currently the hottest team in the NBA. Riding a massive seven-game winning streak and fighting for a spot in the Eastern Conference Play-In Tournament, Buzz City is officially back. But as Thursday’s trade deadline approaches, the Hornets’ front office might be preparing to make their biggest splash yet: making a family dream come true.
According to a new rumor roundup from NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, the Hornets and the Cleveland Cavaliers have held “preliminary conversations” about a trade that would send veteran guard Lonzo Ball to Charlotte.
If the deal goes through, it would mark the first time in their professional careers that Lonzo and LaMelo Ball play on the same NBA team.
Here is a look at the reported framework of the trade, why Cleveland is looking to sell, and how the elder Ball brother fits into Charlotte’s surging lineup.
The Trade Framework: Clearing Cap for Cleveland
Lonzo Ball was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers last offseason in a swap for Isaac Okoro. However, his time in Cleveland has been turbulent. Plagued by inconsistent shooting and a diminished role, Lonzo was recently benched by head coach Kenny Atkinson, notably not playing a single minute during the Cavs-Hornets showdown on January 21.
Following the Cavaliers’ recent acquisition of Dennis Schröder and Keon Ellis, Lonzo has effectively been squeezed out of the rotation. The 28-year-old guard is currently on the final year of a deal paying him roughly $10 million.
According to The Stein Line, Cleveland is eager to shed that salary to gain financial flexibility. The discussions with Charlotte would reportedly involve the Hornets sending back second-round draft capital to absorb Lonzo’s contract.
Why the Hornets Want Zo
While the narrative of reuniting the Ball brothers is a marketer’s dream, the basketball fit also makes sense for Charlotte.
LaMelo Ball is playing at an elite level, but the Hornets’ offense has historically slipped whenever their superstar point guard heads to the bench. The recent acquisition of Collin Sexton brought scoring punch to the second unit, but the team still lacks a true, pass-first backup point guard and perimeter defender.
Lonzo brings exactly that. Even with his shooting struggles (currently averaging 4.6 points and 3.9 assists per game on limited minutes), Lonzo’s high basketball IQ, unselfish playmaking, and point-of-attack defense would provide stability for Charlotte’s bench.
The Verdict: A Dream Realized?
The Ball brothers have long been vocal about their desire to eventually team up in the NBA. With the Hornets (currently 13-1 in their last 14 games with their starting lineup intact) pushing for the postseason, bringing in a seasoned veteran with built-in chemistry to their franchise star feels like a no-brainer.
If Charlotte is willing to part with the draft capital, we could finally see the “Ball Bros in Buzz City” as soon as Thursday afternoon.
