The ripple effects of Jimmy Butler’s season-ending ACL tear are already reshaping the NBA trade landscape, with the Golden State Warriors at the epicenter of the speculation. Just hours after news broke that Butler’s campaign was over, NBA insider Shams Charania identified Sacramento Kings veteran DeMar DeRozan as a potential target to fill the void in the Bay Area.
“Does a player, say DeMar DeRozan, does that fit the bill of what the Warriors could need without Jimmy Butler?” Charania posed during his report. “But one way or another, the Warriors are about to find out where they stand with Jonathan Kuminga this season.”
The connection to Sacramento is not new, but the urgency is. According to Forbes sports business reporter Evan Sidery, a legal trade framework already exists between the two Northern California franchises. The proposed deal would see the Warriors send disgruntled forward Jonathan Kuminga and a veteran minimum salary to the Kings in exchange for DeRozan. Such a move would provide Golden State with an established scorer (averaging 19.0 points on 50.8% shooting this season) to pair with Stephen Curry, while finally resolving the season-long tension surrounding Kuminga’s role.
However, the betting markets are telling a different story. Immediately following the Butler injury news, the odds of Jonathan Kuminga being traded plummeted on the prediction market Polymarket Sports.
This sharp drop in trade probability suggests a growing belief among handicappers that the Warriors may be forced to keep Kuminga. With Butler’s minutes now available, Golden State faces a critical decision: do they trade their young asset for a short-term fix like DeRozan, or do they thrust Kuminga back into a prominent role to salvage their season from within?
“The Warriors need production at the forward spot now more than ever,” one market analyst noted. “Trading Kuminga leaves them thin, but keeping him requires repairing a relationship that has been reportedly fractured.”
As the trade deadline approaches, the Warriors find themselves at a crossroads. The DeRozan option offers a “win-now” patch for a roster built around an aging Curry, but the sudden shift in the betting market indicates that Jimmy Butler’s absence might have inadvertently saved Jonathan Kuminga’s roster spot in Golden State.
