Just when we thought the “Luka vs. Dallas” narrative was settling down, ESPN insider Brian Windhorst just walked into the room and pulled the pin on a grenade.
While Luka Dončić is currently putting up MVP numbers in Los Angeles, Windhorst went on Get Up and First Take this week to deliver a take that has Mavericks fans buzzing and Lakers fans raging. His claim? That despite the pain of the trade, Dallas might have actually upgraded in the leadership department with Cooper Flagg.
According to Windhorst, Flagg isn’t just a consolation prize; he has the potential to be a “better player and a better franchise leader than Luka Dončić.”
The “Jaw-Dropping” Statement
Windhorst didn’t mince words. Speaking on the Mavericks’ rapid rebuild after dumping Anthony Davis to Washington, he admitted that trading a generational talent like Luka is usually a death sentence. But Flagg changes the math.
“I can’t see into the future, but it’s very possible Cooper Flagg could end up being a better player and a better franchise leader than Luka Dončić,” Windhorst said. “What he can do at both ends of the court elevates his entire team; it’s extraordinarily exciting.”
The key distinction here is “Franchise Leader.” Windhorst hinted that while Luka is an offensive savant, Flagg’s two-way “furious” competitiveness brings a different cultural gravity to the locker room—one that might be more conducive to winning championships in Dallas than the previous era.
The LeBron Comparison: “The Only One”
This take comes hot on the heels of Flagg’s historic 49-point performance against the Charlotte Hornets, where he set the NBA record for most points by a teenager.
Windhorst noted that in his 24 years of covering the NBA, he has only seen three teenagers who “blew him away”: LeBron James, Luka Dončić, and Victor Wembanyama. But when it comes to controlling the game on both ends, the list gets shorter.
“The way Cooper controls the game on both ends of the floor, the only one he compares to is LeBron,” Windhorst stated. “This is the most complete teenager we have seen since LeBron James.”
He even went a step further, arguing that the 19-year-old Flagg already possesses a better jump shot than LeBron did at the same age, while bringing a “defensive dominating” presence that rookie LeBron hadn’t yet developed.
The Verdict
It is a massive claim to make while Luka is arguably the best offensive player on the planet. But Windhorst’s logic is clear: Luka dominates the ball, but Flagg dominates the game.
With the “Flagg Era” officially underway and the rookie doing things we haven’t seen since 2003, the Mavericks might have stumbled into the one scenario where losing Luka Dončić doesn’t haunt them forever.
